A2 · SUPPLEMENTARY GRAMMAR PRACTICE
Präteritum regular and strong verb forms
Regular verbs form past stems with -te, sometimes -ete for pronunciation: machte, arbeitete. Strong verbs may change the stem vowel: ging, kam, las. Learn the principal forms with each verb. Written narratives often use Präteritum, while Perfekt is common for conversational past events; use varies by region and verb.
