Der, die, das: German articles

The idea

Learn a noun together with its article. Der marks masculine nouns, die feminine nouns and das neuter nouns. Grammatical gender does not always match natural gender. In the nominative plural, all three use die.

Examples to say aloud

• der Tisch
  the table
• die Tasche
  the bag
• das Buch
  the book

A common mistake

Do not guess gender from the English meaning. Store “das Buch”, rather than just “Buch”.
